If you, like me, have
If you, like me, have developed a dependency to e-mail and are going crazy somewhere in the middle of nowhere, trying to connect with your laptop while the clock is ticking and adding hefty phone charges to the hotel bill, have I just heard of a solution for us! Sorry to sound like a cheesy advertisement, but having just paid 8 euros in Venice for half-an-hour at a web café plus about 15 euros for quick e-mail calls from the hotel I was all too happy to sign up with Net2Roam and be—at last—able to call local numbers for my web access in 150 countries without the hassle of new configurations every time. Another web innovation of this caliber is of course the classic JFax that allows one to receive faxes and voice mail as e-mail attachments. Together they do, in fact, contribute in making the office truly portable! You won’t see me at home again!!!

“Most people would probably consider their tastes more discerning than those of the family pet. But according to new research, humans can be trained to crave food in a manner reminiscent of Pavlov’s dogs. The findings, published today in the journal Science, may help scientists better understand compulsive eating disorders and substance addiction.” From Scientific American.

“It is not too much
“It is not too much to say that our world was founded by Newton. After Einstein’s discovery of relativity, the popular imagination conceived the notion that henceforth we would inhabit a time-space continuum in which the atom would be the arbiter of everything, spacemen would return to earth younger than they were when they left, and apples might fall upwards from the bough. But ours is a Newtonian reality, and always will be. He took our human measure, and he is our yardstick. Einstein himself revered Newton, whose portrait was the only one he kept on the wall above his desk in his office at Princeton.” From a review by John Banville of Isaac Newton by James Gleick, in the Guardian.
